| Management | Breast milk is the best gift of Almighty creator for the new born babies. Human breast milk has no alternative, because it is the most appropriate of all available milks for human infants since it is uniquely adapted to their needs. It is always readily available at the proper temperature and needs no time for preparation. The milk is fresh and free of contaminating any micro-organism and rich in different maternal antibodies (specially secretory IgA antibodies) which protect the baby from infections. So, mother’s milk is the ideal food for the infants that can be offered as the ‘starting feed’ and would be sufficient enough during the first 4-6 months of age & can be continued for upto 2 years providing the child receives necessary (weaning) foods after initial 4 to 6 months of age. Breast milk production or lactation usually starts immediately after dilevery, but sometimes there may be slow onset & taking 4 to 5 days. Sucking stimuli of the nipple enhance the milk production. The infant should be put to the breast as early as the first hour of life. First few drops of milk- the colostrum, which is very concentrate & rich in antibodies (as mentioned above)- is very beneficial to the infants. |
