| Signs Symptoms | The symptoms are: 1 Neurotic and psychotic: e.g depression, excitability, nervousness, irritability, headache, inso-mnia, paresthesia of the hands and feet etc. 2. Gastro-intestinal: e.g change of appetite, dyspe-psia, intestinal distension & constipation. 3. Cardiovascular: e.g hot flushes, profuse sweating, cold shiver etc. 4. Genital and sexual: e.g decreased libido, dyspareunia due to dryness of vagina, sometimes increased sex desire. 5. Other sign/symptoms: e.g painful and tender breasts, joint pains, pigmentation of skin etc. |

| Management | Management: 1. Explanation (that it is a physiological process) and reassurance. Advice for physical exercise & rest. 2. If dyspareunia- a water soluble lubricant can be used to overcome dryness of the vagina. 3. To anxiety- tranquilizer (phenobarbitone). 4. Avoidence of alcohol, coffee, hot baths, etc. 5. If hypertension- hypotensive agents may be given. 6. Oestrogen therapy- may be given to releive symptoms e.g stilboestrol 0.2-0.5mg once daily for 2 weeks. 7. Post menopausal woman- ethinyl oestradiol 0.01-0.05mg daily for 20 days in a month for few months. 8. Menstruating woman- combined pill 1 tablet at night for 21 days starting from 1st day of cycle. |
