| Introduction | Cerebral malaria is the most urgent & severe complication of falciparum malaria. This is manifested by headache, mental disturbances, various neurological signs, stiffness of neck, muscular twiching, retinal hemorrhage, convulsions, delirium & coma. |

| Clinical Features | Clinical feature: 1. Eyes remain open with an unseeing state. 2. Oculogyric crisis, teeth grinding, pouting, grasp reflexes may present. 3. Deep stertorus breathing with extensor posturing. 4. Stiff neck. 5. Stress reflexes symmetrical & brisk. Planter extensor, abdominal reflexes absent. 6. Retinal hemmorrhage. |
| Preventions | |
| Treatment | Treatment: See treatment schedule given above. Or, Chloroquine 5mg/kg or Quinine 10mg/kg i.v infusion over (2-4) hours to avoid acute circulatory failure and encephalopathy. The dose should be repeated 8 hourly until the pt. can take orally. |
