| Cause | Causative agents of bacterial meningitis:2 Any bacterium can cause meningitis but some are more frequent & some are less frequent with age variation. Neonates: Common organisms- Gm-negative acilli (E. coli, Proteus etc.) Group B streptococcus. Less common- Listeria monocytogenes. Preschool child: Common organisms- H. influenzae, N. meningitidis, Strep, pneumoniae. Less common- Myco. tuberculosis. Older child & adult: Common organisms- N. manigitidis, Strep, pneumoniae Less common- List, monocytogenes, Myco. tuberculosis, Cryptococcus neofonnans, Staph. aureus, H. influenzae * In tubercular meningitis the causative organism is- mycobacterium tuberculosis. * In aseptic meningitis the causative organisms are mostly virus e.g. mumps virus, coxsakie virus, herpes virus etc. |
