Ciprofloxacin

Indications & Dose:

• Corneal ulcers caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and possibly Serratia marcescens and Streptococcus viridans.

Adults and children older than age 12: Instill 2 drops in the affected eye q 15 minutes for first 6 hours, and then 2 drops q 30 minutes for remainder of first day. On day 2, instill 2 drops hourly. On days 3 to 14, instill 2 drops q 4 hours.

• Bacterial conjunctivitis caused by S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and possibly S. pneumoniae.

Adults and children older than age 12: Instill 1 or 2 drops into the conjunctival sac of affected eye q 2 hours while awake, for first 2 days. Then 1 or 2 drops q 4 hours while awake, for next 5 days. Or, 1/4-inch ribbon of ointment into conjunctival sac t.i.d. for first 2 days. Then, 1/2-inch ribbon b.i.d. for next 5 days.

Contraindications:

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Use cautiously in breast-feeding women

EYE/ENT: local burning or discomfort, white crystalline precipitate (in the superficial portion of the corneal defect in patients with corneal ulcers), margin crusting, crystals or scales, foreign body sensation, itching, conjunctival hyperemia, bad or bitter taste, corneal staining, allergic reactions, keratopathy, lid edema, tearing, photophobia, decreased vision.

GI: nausea.
