Tretinoin

Indications & Dose:

INDICATIONS AND USES: Topical treatment of acne vulgaris; lamellar ichthyosis.* mollusca contagiosa*, verrucae plantaris,* verrucae planae juneniles,* ichthyosis vulgaris,* bullous congenital icthyosiform and pityriasis ruba pilaris,* improvement of photoaged skin (especially wrinkling and liver spots)*; PO induction of remission in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL)

DOSAGE

Adult and CHild > 12 yr

• TOP apply qd before retiring; begin therapy with 0.025% cream or 0.01% gel and increase concentration as tolerated; if stinging or irritation develops, decrease frequency of application

• PO 45 mg/m2/day divided bid until complete remission documented; discontinue 30 days after achievement of complete remission or after 90 days of treatment, whichever comes first; follow with standard consolidation and/or maintenance chemotherapy

Eczematous skin, sunburned skin (do not use until skin is fully recovered)

Interaction:

Drugs

Sulfur, resorcinol, benzol peroxide, salicylic acid: Concomitant topical acne products may cause significant skin irritation

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION: Pregnancy category B: teratogenic risk when used topically is thought to be close to zero; minimal absorption occurring aftr topical application probably precludes detection of clinically significant amounts in breast milk

CNS: Dizziness, fever, headache

CV: CHF, dysrhythmia, hypertension

EENT: Visual disturbance

GI: Constipation, diarrhoea, dyspepnia, mucositin, nausea, vomiting

MS: Bone pain

SKIN: Alopecia, blistering, crusting, edema, erythema, excessive dryness, increased sweating, initial acne flare-up, irritation, photosensitivity, pruritis, rash, temporary hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
