Ephedrine

Indications & Dose:

 Acute and subacute rhinitis, sinusitis & reversible airway obstruction


DOSE : 1-2 applications in each nostril night and morning or 4 hourly if necessary

Contraindications:

 Hyperthyroidism, hypertension, coronary artery diseases, prostatic hypertrophy, closed angle glaucoma. Infants, debilitated patients, patients with impaired cough reflex.. 

Side Effects:

Tachycardia, anxiety, restless-ness, insomnia, tremor, arrhythmias, dry mouth, cold extremities. 

Cautions:

 Hyperthyroidism, diabetes  mellitus, ischemic heart disease, hyper-tension, renal impairment, elderly, may cause acute retention in prostatic hyper- trophy. 

Precautions:

 Cardiac disease, if use is prolonged it may cause rebound congestion

Drugs


May cause hypertention with tricyclic antidepressants, MAO inhibi-tors, arrhythmias with antidepressants Anaesthetics
