Indications & Dose:
Use Emergency treatment ix poisoning by drugs and chemicals; aids the elimination of certain drugs and improves decontamination of excessive ingestions of sustained release products or in the presence of bezoars; repetitive doses have proven useful to enhance the elimination of certain drugs (eg, theophylline, phenobarbital, and aspirin); repetitive doses for gastric dialysis in uremia to adsorb various waste products; dietary supplement (digestive aid)
DOSAGE ORAL: Acute poisoning: Note: 10 g of activated charcoal for each 1 g of toxin is considered adequate; this may require multiple doses. If sorbitol is also used, sorbitol dose should not exceed 1.5 g/kg. When using multiple doses of charcoal, sorbitol should be given with every other dose (not to exceed 2 doses/ day).
Children:
1 grist, as a single rinse; if multiple doses are needed, additional doses can be gives as 12.5 g/hour or equivalent (in, 0.5 g/kg every 2 hours) or year-to years; 25-50 g as a single dose, smeller doses 2b g) may be used in children 1-5 years duets smaller gut lumen capacity Children 12 years and Adults 25-100 gas a single dose; 1 multiple doses are needed.

Administration Flavoring agents eg chocolutel and sorbitol Can enhance charcoal’s petal’ ability. If treatment includes ipecac syrup, reduce vomiting prior to administration of charcoal. Often given with a laxative or cathartic; check for presence of bowel sounds before administration.

Contraindications:
Intestinal obstruction; GI tract not anatomically intact; patents at risk of hemorrhage or Dl perforation; it use would increase risk and severity of aspiration; not effective for cyanide, mineral acids, caustic alkalis, organic solvents, ton, ethanol, methanol poisoning, lithium, do not use charcoal with sorbitol in patients with fructose intolerance charcoal with, sorbitol not recommended in children <1 year of age

Decreased Effect: Charcoal decreases the effect of ipecac syrup.
Ethanol/Nutrition/Herb Interactions Food: Do not mix with milk, ice cream, sherbet, or marmalade (may reduce charcoal’s effectiveness).
Stability Adsorbs gases from air, store in closed container. Dilute powder math at least 8 mL of water per 1 g of Charcoal, or mix in a charcoal to muter ratio 1:4 to 1:8. Mix to form a slurry.
Warnings:
When using ipecac with charcoal, induce vomiting with pecan before administering actuated charcoal since charcoal adsorbs ipecac syrup charcoal may noose vomiting which is hazardous in petroleum distillate and caustic ingestion; if charcoal in sorbitol is administered, doves should be limited to prevent excessive fluid and electrolyte tosses. Use caution with decreased peristalsis. Most effective when administered within 1 hoar of ingestion for most ingestions

Gastrointestinal Vomiting (incidence may increase with sorbitol), diarrhea (with Sorbitol), constipation, swelling of abdomen, bowel obstruction
Miscellaneous: Facal discoloration (black)
