Ergot Alkaloids

Indications & Dose:

Abortive therapy for vascular headaches including migraine and cluster headaches

Contraindications:

Pregnancy (or women at risk for pregnancy), peripheral vascular disease, hepatic or renal impairment, CAD, uncontrolled hypertension, sepsis

Interaction:

Drugs

Azithromycin, dirithromycin, erythromycin: Coadministration may result in ergotism

Nitroglycerin: Decreased antianginal effects of nitroglycerin

Excreted into breast milk; has caused symptoms of ergotism (e.g., vomiting, diarrhea) in the infant; e hxcessive dosage or prolonged administration may inhibit lactation

CV: Chest pain, coronary vasoconstriction (large doses), increase or decrease in blood pressure, transient tachycardia or bradycardia
GI: Nausea, vomiting
MISC: Itching, localized edema, muscle pain in extremities, numbness and tinglixng of fingers and toes, weakness in legs
