Pizotifen

Indications & Dose:

Lack of appetite (anorexia). Marked underweight of mental or nervous origin underweight particularly in convalescence. Mood disturbance in the elderly. Prophylaxis of migraine.
DOSE
Adults
: Starting with 0.5mg per day, dosage should be progressively increased up to 0.5mg three times daily.
Elderly Patients: A) starting dose of 0.5mg daily is recommended, and is increased gradually, preferably increasing b) 0.5mg per day. For most patients the daily optimum is 2 to 3mg in divided doses, but up to 12mg are well tolerated. Following improvement usually within 6 to 8 weeks gradual reduc-tion or withdrawal of treatment can be attempted.


For migraine prophylaxis: Starting with 0.5mg of Pizotifen daily, should be increased progressively. Average maintenance dose 1.5mg of Pizotifen daily in a single or in divided doses. In refractory cases 3-4.5mg daily in divided doses.
Children : 2-6 years: 5-10ml syrup daily 6-12 years: 10-20ml syrup daily in 2 or 3 divided doses, or as directed by the physician. 

Contraindications:

There are no known contraindications. 

Side Effects:

Sedation may be experienced at the beginning of treatment and in some patients this may well be desirable. Cestonil may cause dryness of the mouth.

Precautions:

Very slight anticholinergic effect of pizotifen caution is required in patients with narrow angle glaucoma or urinary retention. However there have been no reports of untoward reactions in such patients given the recommended dosage, not even in the elderly. Cestonil like other drugs, should only be administered in pregnancy in compelling circumstances.
