Indications & Dose:

Primary hypokalemic acidosis due to diarrhoea, hypokalemic alkalosis. Prevention and replenishment of reduced circulatory blood volume and interstitial fluid by replenishing water and electrolytes in E.C.F under the following types of stress: Before during and after surgery, trauma, scalds and burns etc. 

Contraindications:

Hyperkalemia , oliguria, anuria. Addison’s disease,severe burns, lactaoidema (lactic acidosis) with severe liver damage, hyperazotemia. 

Side Effects:

Cerebral, pulmonary and peripheral oedema, congestive heart failure, acidosis and electrolyte imbalance may occur with a large volume and / or rapid infusion.

Cautions:

Renal failure due to renal disease. Cardiac failure.  Reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract diseases.  Hyper tonic dehydration.  Severe liver damage.  Alkalosis.  Lactic acid metabolism disturbances.  Sodium chloride content of this solution is 6.0 gms/Litre.  Therefore, care should be taken in those cases  where salt intake is restricted as in oedema, hypertension etc
