Indications & Dose:
1. DNS is indicated for use with blood inpatients who need additional fluid with minimal sodium intake.
2. As an initial hydrating solution for establishing renal function.
3. When calories are needed and when chloride loss has been greater than or equal to sodium loss.
4. When alkalosis is present in the presence of fluid loss in case of gastric suction with loss of hydrochloric acid. Therefore loss of CI is compensated.
5. To provide nutrient in a fluid that does not hydrate the tissue.
DOSE
100-1000ml/day for infants. 200 to 2000ml/day for children.
1-3 litre for adults depends on age, weight and condition of the patient.
Rate: 400ml/hr in adults. More rapidly in shock due to sodium loss.
