Indications & Dose:

Iron deficiency anemia


BY SLOW INTRAVENOUS INJECTION, OR BY INTRAVENOUS INFUSION


Adults and Children:


Dosage is highly individualized and is based on patient’s weight and hemoglobin level. Drug is usually given I.N.; preservative-free solution can be given I.V. Check current literature for recommended protocol.
Pediatric use:


• Drug is not recommended for use in children under age 4 months


Children:


Over 3kg: 1.5mg/kg i.m as single daily dose: max. 100mg per inj. Under 3kg, not recommended.


BREAST-FEEDING


• Traces of unmetabolized iron dextran are excreted in breast milk; impact on neonate is unknown. 

Contraindications:

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitive to drug, in those with all anemias except iron-deficiency anemia, and in those with acute infectious renal disease. Use cautiously in patients with impaired hepatic function, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory diseases.

Side Effects Or Adverse Reactions:

CNS: headache, transitory paresthesia, arthalgia, myalgia, dizziness, malaise
CV: hypotensive reaction, peripheral vascular flushing (with overly rapid I.V. administration)
GI: nausea, anorexia
Respiratory: bronchospasm, dyspnea
Skin: rash, urticaria, purpura
Other: soreness, inflammation, brown skin discoloration (at I.M. injection site); local phlebitis (I.V. injection site), sterile abscess, nercosis, alophy, fibrosis, anaphylaxis delayed sensitivity reactions, fever, chills.
