Indications & Dose:
Uncomplicated premature labour, asthma.
initially 5 mcg per minute for 20 minutes, rate increased gradually 20 minutes in steps of 2.5mcg/
minute untill contraction have ceased, continue for one hour then decrease every 20 minutes in steps of 2.5mcg/minute to lowest dose that maintain suppression, continue at this level for 12 hours then
5mg every 8 hours for as long as is desirable to prolong pregnancy (or alternatively follow the intravenous infu-sion by subcutaneous injection 250mcg every 6 hours for a few days then by mouth as above).
Contraindications:
Antepartum haemorrhage, toxaemia of pergnancy, cord compression, threatened abortion, condition when prolongation of pregnancy is hazardous.
Side Effects:
Tachycardia, anxiety, rise in blood sugar.
Cautions:
Maternal thyrotoxicosis or cardiovascular disease, diabetes. Monitor maternal & fetal heart rate.
