Finasteride

Indications & Dose:

Benign prostatic hyperplasia



Adult: 5 mg daily, review treatment at 3–6 months and then every 6–12 months (may require several months treatment before benefit is obtained)


Androgenetic alopecia in men



Adult: 1 mg daily. 

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to finasteride, pregnancy. 

Side Effects:

Increased libido, breast tenderness, impotence and hypersensitivity reactions.

Precautions:

PRECAUTIONS: Obstructive uropathy.  Exclude prostate cancer; perform evaluation prior to and during therapy. Females may absorb drug from semen or handling tabs; risk in pregnancy.


PRECAUTIONS  Hepatic dysfunction, patients with large residual urine volume, increase in PSA level.
OLD AGE: May be used. 

Interaction:

Drug
Theophylline: Increased theophylline clearance  and decreased its half-life.
