Indications & Dose:

Hyperthyroidism



Adults


Initial dose: 15-45mg daily in divided doses depending upon severity. Maint: 2.5-25mg daily for 12 months.


Thyroidectomy: 



15-45mg daily in divided doses for 2-4 weeks. 

Contraindications:

Tracheal obstruction 

Side Effects:

Nausea, headache, rashes, pruritus, arthralgia, rarely alopaecia, agranulocytosis, jaundice, transient leuco-penia, maculopapular rash, arthralgia, nausea, fever, loss of hair, hepatic damage. 

Cautions:

Pregnancy, breast feeding (use lowest possible dose if needed). Liver disorder. 

Precautions:

To report to physician if sore throat, fever appears and to stop therapy.
Old age: Use with caution.

Interaction:

Drugs
Warfarin: Increased sensitivity to warfarin in hyperthyroid  state. Dose adjustment required when patient rendered euthyroid.
