Testosterone And Esters

Indications & Dose:

Replacement therapy to maintain sex characteristics in adults with testicular failure, accidental castration. In hereditary angioneurotic oedema, infertility   due to defective spermatogenesis, osteo-porosis,  refractory anaemia, carcinoma breast, menopausal syndrome, endometriosis. To improve nitrogen balance in catabolic states. Certain types of infertility due to disorders of spermatogenesis.

DOSE: See under each preparation. 

Contraindications:

Severe renal disease, severe cardiac disease, severe hepatic disease, genital bleeding (abnormal), male breast cancer, prostate cancer. Pregnancy &   breast-feeding.

Side Effects:

CNS: Aggressive behavior, anxiety, depression, dizziness, emotional lability, fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia, paresthesias, sweating, tremors
CV: CHF, edema, increased blood pressure
EENT: Conjunctival edema, deepening of voice, nasal congestion
GI: Cholestatic jaundice, constipation, hepathocellular neoplasm, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, peliosis hepatitis 
GU: Amenorrhea, clitoral hypertrophy, decreased breast size, gynecomastia, increased or decreased libido, priapism, testicular atrophy, vaginitis, virilization in females, oligospermia, menstrual irregularities
HEME: Polyecythemia, suppression of clotting factors
METAB: Hypercalcemia (in breast cancer), hypercholesterolemia, hyperglycemia, increased potassium, premature epiphyseal closure (children)
SKIN: Acneiform lesions, acne vulgaris, alopecia, flushing, hirsutism, oily hair and skin, rash, sweating
MISC: Carpal tunnel syndrome

Cautions:

Diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, risk factors for atherosclerosis, hepatic disease, seizure disorder, renal disease.
Old age: May be given.
