Alendronate Acid / Alendronate Sodium

Indications & Dose:

Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis



Adult (female): 10 mg daily, alternatively 70 mg once weekly.


Treatment of osteoporosis in men



Adult (male): 10 mg daily.


Prevention and treatment of corticosteroidinduced osteoporosis in postmenopausal women not receiving hormone replacement therapy



Adult (female): 10 mg daily. 

Contraindications:

Hypocalcemia, esophageal abnormalities, delayed esophageal emptying, patient unable to stand or sit upright for at least 30 min after administration contraindicated in nursing mothers 

Side Effects:

CNS: Headache
GI: Abdominal distention, abdominal pain, acid regurgitation, dysphagia, esophageal ulcer, flatulence, gastritis
METAB: Hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia
MS: Musculoskeletal pain
SKIN: Erythema, rash
MISC: Drug fever

CrCl <35 ml/min; uncorrected mineral deficiencies (i.e., calcium, vitamin D)

Antacids: Calcium, magnesium and aluminum bind alendronate and reduce absorption


Food (including coffee and orange juice): Decreases bioBrands Available with Cost of alendronate by 40%-60%


Aspirin: Increased risk of upper GI adverse effects
