Indications & Dose:
Prevention and treatment of plasmodium falciparum malaria.
Adults
Prophylaxis. Over 14 years 50mg weekly treatment: over 14 years 500mg-1000mg as a single dose.
Children
Prophylaxis: under 4 years quarter adult dose, 4-8 years half adult dose, 9-14 years three quarters of adult dose treatment, under 4 years 250mg 4-8years 500mg, 9-14 years 1000mg all as single doses.
Contraindications:
Sulphonamide sensitivity, severe liver & kidney dysfunction, blood dyscrasias, neonates, pregnancy, lactation
Side Effects:
Skin rash, pharyngitis or pruritis, G.I. distress, blood dyscrasias, erythema multiform, Steven Johnson syndrome, Lyell’s syndrome.
Cautions:
Perform regular blood counte during long term prophylaxis. Avoid excess sun.
