Indications & Dose:
Uro-genital infections, typhoid fever. Acute bacterial gastro-enteritis. Gonorrhoea. Prophylaxis of sepsis in neutropenic patients. Sexually transmitted disease, eye infection.
DOSE
Adult
Complicated uinary tract infctions 400mg twice daily for 7-10 days (for 3 days in uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections).
Cystitis: 400mg daily for 3 days after meal Chronic relapsing urinary tract infections 400 mg twice daily for 12 weeks, may be reduced to 400mg once daily of adquate suppression with in first 4 week.
Typhoid fever 400mg twice daily for 14 days. Gonorrhoea: 800mg as single dose. Acute bacterial gastro enteritis: 400mg 2-3 times daily for 5 days. Prophylaxis of sepsis in neutropenic patients 400mg 2-3 times daily upto 8 weeks.
Dose should take with water atleast 1 hour before or 2 hour after
Children: Not recommended.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy.
Side Effects:
Nausea, epigastric discomfort, abdominal cramps, anorexia, diarrhoea, sleep disturbances, skin rash and irritability.
Cautions:
Precautions:
Renal impairment, patients with history of epilepsy. Hydration, urinary output. Excessive sunlight.
Breast-feeding: Safety not established.
Old age: May be used.
Interaction:
Drugs
Anti neoplastic drugs: Decrease serum levels of norfloxacin.
Caffeine: Enhanced efficacy of caffeine.
Oral anticoagulants: Enhanced effects of anticoagulants.
Cyclosporine: Nephrotoxicity increased by norfloxacin.
Theophylline: Increased plasma levels of theophylline resulting in toxicity.
