SECNIDAZOLE

Indications & Dose:

• BY MOUTH

Adults

Intestinal amoebiasis & giardiasis:

1 day treatment 2g as single once only dosage.

Adult Single dose of 4 tabs or 2 Forte tabs. Sexual partner should be given same dose.

Children 3mg/kg body wt. single dose. 

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity.

PREGNANCY: 1st trimester of pregnancy & breastfeeding.

Side Effects:

Anorexia, nausea, glossitis, epigastric pain, diarrhea, skin rash, urticaria, leucopenia, fatigue, headache. 

Cautions:

Alcohol during treatment.  1st trimester of pregnancy. 

Precautions:

Neurological disorders, liver dysfunction, avoid alcohol.

Old age: Caution, may be given in reduced dose

Interaction:

Drugs

Anticoagulants: May potentiate anticoagulant effect of warfarin; increased risk of hemorrhage.

Disulfiram: Antabuse-like effects.

Cimetidine: Half-life of secnidazole is prolonged.

Lithium: Plasma levels of lithium increased leading to toxicity.
