Indications & Dose:

Adult and CHild > 16 yr


• Upper respiratory infections:


PO 600 mg q24h x 10 days


Lower respiratory infections,


skin/skin structure infections: PO 300 mg q12h x 10 days


Renal failure:


CrCl <30 ml/min, 300 mg qd


Child > 6 mo


• PO 14 mg/kg q24h to max 60 mg qd (qd dosing not studied in skin infections, 7 mg/kg q12h recommended)


• Renal failure: CrCl < 30 ml/min, 7 mg/kg qd (max300mg)


 

Contraindications:

Side Effects:

CNS: Headache


GI: Pseudomembranous colitis, red stools (not significant, formed by a complex of cefdinir and iron), diarrhea (16%), nausea, dyspepsia, flatulence, elevated LFTS


GU: Monilial vaginitis, renal failure


HEME: Bone marrow suppression


SKIN: Stevens-Johnson syndrome

Hypersensitivity to penicillins, renal disease 

Interaction:

Drugs


Antacids, Iron: Interference with cefdinir absorption, take antibiotic 2 hr before or after (can be administered with iron fortified infant formula)


Probenecid: Inhibits cefdinir excretion


Live typhoid vaccine: Interference at least 24 hr after last dose
