Indications & Dose:

Bacterial or protozoal diarrhea and enteritis caused by susceptible organisms Antimicrobial spectrum usually includes:



BY MOUTH


Adults : 1 tab. or 20ml 8 hourly.


Typhoid: 2 tabs 3-4 times daily.


Children : Over 5 years 1/2 tab or 10ml 8 hourly; below 5 years 1/4 tab or 2.5 to 5ml. All for 3-7 days or as required.

Contraindications:

Infants < 1 mo 

Side Effects:

CNS: Fever, headache, malaise


CV: Hypertensive crisis, orthostatic hypotension


GI: Anal pruritus, colitis, nausea, proctitis, staphylocaccic enteritis, vomiting


HEME: Hemolysis in G-6-PD deficiency


METAB: Hypoglycemia


MS: Arthralgia


SKIN: Vesicular morbilliform rash

Amphetamines: Hypertensive crisis


Ephedrine: Hypertensive response


Ethanol: Disulfiram-like reaction


Foods high in amine content Hypertensive crisis


Phenylpropanolamine: Hypertensive response

Pregnancy category C; could theoretically produce hemolytic anemia in a G-6-PD deficient newborn if given at term; excretion into breast milk unknown; use caution in nursing mothers
