NITRAZEPAM

Indications & Dose:

Insomnia (short-term use)


  BY MOUTH


Adult: 5–10 mg daily, dose to be taken at bedtime, for debilitated patients, use elderly dose


Elderly: 2.5–5 mg daily, dose to be taken at bedtime.

Contraindications:

Side Effects:

Anorexia, nausea, sedation, nightmares, fatigue, blurring of vision, dry mouth, paradoxical excitement and sweating.

Respiratory depression


Old age: may be given in reduced dose


. Pregnancy & Breast-feeding: Use with cautions 

Interaction:

Drugs


Cimetidine, Oral contraceptives, Disulfiram, fluoxetine, Isoniazid, Ketoconazole, Metoprolol, Propoxyphene, Propranolol, Valporic acid: Elimination of nitrazepam decreased due to inhibition of hepatic metabolism leading to enhanced activity.


Alcohol & other CNS depression: Enhanced CNS effects.


Digoxin: Increase in serum concentration of digoxin.


Levodopa: Decrease in antiparkinsonism efficacy.


Imipramine & Desipramine: Enhanced activity of these drugs.


Aminophylline: Antagonizes the sedative effect.


Rifampicin: Decreases efficacy.


Ranitidine: Decreases GI absorption of nitrazepam.
