Indications & Dose:

 Nonproductive cough


DOSE


Adult


• PO 10-20 mg q4h or 30 mg q6-8h, not to exceed 120 mg/day • PO EXT REL liq 60 mg bid, not to exceed 120 mg/ day


Child


• PO: Age b-12 yr 5-10 mg q4h, not to exceed 60 mg/day; age 2-b yr 2.55 mg q4h, not to exceed 30 mg/ day; EXT REL liq: Age 6-12 yr 30 mg bid, not to exceed 60 mg/day; age 2-5 yr 15 mg bid, not to exceed 30 mg/day

Chronic, persistent, or productive cough; nausea, vomiting; fever; persistent headache 

Interaction:

Drugs Isocarboxazid, MAOIs, Phenelzine: Increased risk of toxicity due to dextromethorphan


Quinidine, terbinafine: Reduced hepatic metabolism of dextromethorphan


Fluoxetine: Case report of a patient on fluoxetine developing visual hallucinations when she began to take dextromethorphan; causality not established Sibutramine: Increased risk of serotonin syndrome
