Indications & Dose:

Cardiogenic shock in infarction or cardiac surgery BY INTRAVENOUS INFUSION Adult: Initially 2–5 micrograms/kg/minute

Contraindications:

Pheochromocytoma, uncorrected tachydysrhythmia or ventricular fibrillation

Side Effects:

CNS: Headache CV: Aberrant conduction, anginal pain, bradycardia, ectopic beats, hypertension, palpitation, tachycardia, vasoconstriction, widened QRS complex EENT: Dilated pupils (high doses) GI: Nausea, vomiting GU: Azotemia RESP: Dyspnea SKIN: Gangrene (high doses for prolonged periods of time), necrosis, piloerection, tissue sloughing with extravasation

Hypovolemia, arterial embolism, occlusive vascular disease, abrupt discontinuation, sulfite sensitivity, concurrent use of MAOIs PREGNANCY; because dopamine is indicated only in life threatening situations, chronic use would not be expected; no data available regarding use in breast feeding

Interaction:

Drugs Ergot alkaloids: Gangrene has been reported Phenytoin: Increased risk of hypotension with IV phenytoin administration
