Indications & Dose:

Diarrhoea  manage-ment, It has been tried in the treatment of large numbers that may be related to zinc deficiency, in deficiency states zinc sulphate is given by mouth as the zinc supplement.  WHO and UNICEF recommending that infant and children with diarrhoea should receive zinc sulphate in addition to ORS as an anti-diarrhoeal in acute and chronic diarrhoea. 



Adults: 70-140mg three times daily.


Children infants: Zinc deficiency: 1.35-2.70 mg zinc monohydrate/kg/day (0.5-1mg elemental zinc/kg/day) divided in 1-3 times daily. Large doses may be required if impaired intestinal absorption or an excess  loss of zinc (eg. excess prolong diarrhoea)

The absorption of zinc may be reduced by iron supplements, penicillamine, phosphorus containing preparations and tetracyclines. 


 

Warnings:

Adverse Effects:

The most frequent adverse effects of zinc salts administered by mouth are gastrointestial like abdominal pain, dyspepsia and nausea.  These are particularly common if zinc salts are taken on an empty stomach and may be reduced by administration with meals.
