BISMUTH SUBSALICYLATE

Indications & Dose:

Adult

BY MOUTH

• Diarrhea: PO 30 ml or 2 tabs q30 60 min; not to exceed 8 doses for >2 days

Prevention of travelers’ diarrhea:

PO 30 ml or 2 tabs qid

• Helicobacter pylori: PO 2 tabs qid (in combination with other agents) 

Child

• Diarrhea: Age 9 12 yr PO 15 mlor 1 tab q30 60 min, not to exceed 8 doses for >2 days; Age 6 9 yr PO 10 ml or 2/3 tab q30 60 min, not to exceed 8 doses for >2 days; Age 3 6 yr PO 5 ml or 1/3 tab q30 60 min, not to exceed 8 doses for >2 days

Anticoagulant therapy; stop use if symptoms do not improve within 2 days or become worse, or if diarrhea is accompanied by high fever or severe abdominal pain

Pregnancy ; salicylate excreted in breast mills

Interaction:

Drugs

Tetracyclines: Decreased absorption of tetracyclines

Labs

•Color: Blackens or discolors stool

• Glucose (urine): Interferes with Benedict’s reaction

CNS: Confusion, twitching

EENT: Blue gums, hearing loss, metallic taste, tinnitus

GI: Black tongue, dark stools, fecal impaction (high doses)

HEME: Increased bleeding time
